On Friday, November 1 a horrific and deadly shooting occurred at Los Angeles International Airport. A man by the name of Paul Anthony Ciancia opened fire in Terminal three, killing Transportation Security Administration agent, Gerardo Hernandez, and injuring several others. David Bowdich, special agent in charge of the Counter terrorism Division at the FBI's
Los Angeles office, actually revealed the murderer's true intentions in
the scheme. With the proof of a handwritten note that said that he did not want to hurt anybody that was "innocent" - only TSA agents, showed his aim to specifically wipe out all TSA agents. Ciancia wanted to “instill fear into their traitorous minds.” The murderer's strange desire to be rid of all TSA agents is not yet discovered, however it is confirmed that Ciancia is charged with murder by federal prosecutors. He is currently in the hospital due to critical conditions resulting from a shot in the leg and head by LAX police. This incident caused chaos throughout the airport and affected more than 1,500 flights and 167,000 passengers. Many flights were delayed or cancelled on Friday, but all is "back to normal" now. It was made clear by the LAX spokesman, Marshall Lowe that all regular operations had resumed Sunday morning.
These type of stories are important to hear about because they open people's eyes into the world of danger that surrounds one's daily life and is likely to bring potential harm upon them. Not only did this incident hurt numerous people, but it also caused all the different schedules of different flights to be disorganized and completely out of order.

"To what extent do our schools serve the goals of a true education?"
From the beginning of time school has been a place to learn. The primary goal of any school is to instill a sense of knowledge, wisdom, or skills by the time one's years at grade school are done. Most schools make this possible for their students by providing them with certain studies, teachers to teach them those subjects, and classrooms to hold the discussions. The primary courses schools provide for their students are the basic studies of math, English, science, and history. These four subjects have always been the main studies of all students from Kindergarten to twelfth grade along with the secondary studies such as the elective classes. The elective classes consist of a variety of subjects such as cooking, woodshop, photography, business, and so on. Then when it comes time to prove the students' knowledge on the certain study they have been learning about they get tested with exams and are judged based on those tests how intelligent they are in that subject. If they score high then they are brilliant and if they do not then they are failures. The real problem in school education is exactly this. Tests are not an accurate way of proving somebody's real knowledge, although they may be the most convenient. They are only beneficial to people who are skillful in some of the different sections of test taking such as multiple choice, fill in the blank, and true or false. Some people's brains do not process the information of multiple choices or sticky fill in the blank situations as others do. However, when one is given the option to freely express all they know of a subject such as one is able to do in the essay portion they can give more sufficient evidence of their true knowledge. Other than the testing portion of school, I believe schools do a great job at sharing all the important information of the vast topics we will need to know about when we become adults.

"Man found walking down street covered in blood charged with murder"

On October 23, a man covered with blood walking down the streets of Huntington Beach was charged with fatally stabbing a 51 year old man by the name of Fredrick Sledge. An off duty officer had spotted Rito Samuel Tejeda, 22, in bloody clothing near Knoxville Avenue and Delaware Street suspecting he had committed some sort of crime related to murder. After he reported the suspicion to the Huntington Police Department, detectives later discovered Sledge's dead body in his apartment and accused Tejeda of the murder. He was accused of repeatedly stabbing the man and then casually leaving after the incident as he was found by the police later on. He was charged with one felony count of murder with a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a deadly weapon. Tejeda faces a maximum 26 years to life in state prison and is being held on $1 million bail. The hearing is scheduled to be on Nov. 22 in Westminster’s West Justice Center.
These type of news are important to know about because we must be aware of the potential danger that can be around us at all times. For the police to perform their job correctly and imprison convicts such as Tejeda prevents fewer criminals to walk the streets among others and cause harm to any being.

"BART workers gather for vigil for those killed in train accident"

On Sunday evening numerous Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) employees gathered for a candlelight vigil in commemoration of the two workers who died during their track inspection when struck and killed by a commuter train. The BART employee and construction worker were studying and working on a dip in the track when they fatally crashed into the moving train between the Walnut Creek and Peasant Hill stations. One was acting as a lookout, while the other inspected the track. During the Candlelight vigil many of the workers expressed their true care and respect for the tragic occurrence by wearing their work uniforms, holding candles, and hugging and speaking quietly amongst each other. Holding a candle with tears running down his face, Nucion Avent, a BART worker and union member, said he knew both men who were killed. “All over the system we are hurting because we are family here,” he said. He then asked for a moment of silence for the two workers who were killed, Christopher Sheppard of Hayward and Larry Daniels of Oakland. The most devastating part about the accident was that it could have been prevented, as said by Richard Stingily, a former train operator and foreman who has worked for BART for 27 years. Regardless, the warmest love, prayers, and condolences were sent out to the families' of the deceased tonight.
It is very important to always keep a look out for one's self and beware of one's surroundings because especially in that type of situation great danger can be around at any given moment. If the train operator could have stopped the train at the right time it would save the two precious lives that were lost that day. These kinds of problems are the ones that we must focus on and solve in order to prevent any other crucially harmful events.

On October 11 one of Huntington Academy's very own teachers was lost due to a tragic murder. Everything was running smoothly for Kellye Taylor's elementary class as she and another teacher supervised the "Fun Friday" activities at Orizaba Park across the street from the school. Sitting on a folding chair, Taylor watched the children play on the jungle gym and other play sets, until a man by the name of Steven Brown approached her from behind and stabbed her. The connection between Brown and Taylor is significant since she is the grandmother of Brown's four children and has custody of them. However, the reason of the attack is still under wraps for more investigation. Whenever the children witnessed the attack, they ran back to school to tell Taylor's sister, Pamela Huffman what happened. As soon as she heard about the event she ran to the scene as fast as she could to help her sister. She stated, "All I could do was run to her. I saw her slip away. I knew she wasn't going to make it." People expressed their true sorrow for the death of Taylor at the candlelight vigil on Saturday in commemoration for her. "It's like a nightmare. It's like I want to wake up from a bad dream," said another one of taylor's sisters, Mary Bryant.
These type of stories are important to hear about because it shows us how even family can go against one another in certain circumstances. It shows us how far a father will go for the custody of his children even if it means hurting or even killing another family member in the process.

"William Haulkner's Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech"

William Faulkner's Peace Prize Acceptance Speech was one that encouraged all writers to write about subjects that were passionate and uplifting. He urged all writers to connect to their readers' souls by pure and genuine words. The different conflicts in one's heart concerning love, courage, compassion, honesty, and sacrifice were what Faulkner believed to be the most important components of life and worth writing about. To be successful in this work he believed that writers must be original, honest, and have a strong voice. He ultimately valued the soul of mankind and that being the key to one's true identity.
Jacqueline's analysis on this essay particularly drew my attention not only because of the fascinating subject of one's outlook on life, but her fantastic way of explaining the idea in a short and interesting way. She really expressed all the important parts of the speech in detail without boring the crowd. She included some of the major methods of argument such as Claim of Value and Claim of Policy. The three methods of persuasion known as Ethos, Logos, and Pathos were used as well. Her enthusiasm about the topic also uplifted my spirit and made me want to know more information on the subject. If Jacqueline slowed down her pace while presenting the project that would help the listeners form their thoughts more carefully. However, her overall presentation was outstanding and joyfully listened too. Splendid work Jacqueline!

"Orange County blaze chars 30 acres; 1 firefighter injured"

On Sunday, October 7, an outrageous blaze that expanded 30 acres into Silverado, Orange County occurred. The fire started at about 10:10 a.m. in a large mulch pile at a nursery in the 27900 block of Baker Canyon Road. The area is near the edge of the Cleveland National Forest. 125 firefighters from departments across Orange County and beyond were battling the fire on Sunday afternoon. The ongoing fight to bring down this fire is being achieved by the helicopters full of tremendous amounts of water to throw down on the designated area of flames. The strong efforts put in by the firefighters is also what is getting the job done, however the mission is not yet completed. Orange County Fire Authority Captain, Steve Concialdi said the fire spread despite efforts to keep the flames in check. He said the blaze was driven by steady Santa Ana winds of about 10 mph and that conditions were dry, with relative humidity at a low 7%. All was successful at this point in preventing any major injuries/deaths upon the people or important buildings. However, one firefighter was slightly injured and one building was damaged. The injured firefighter was taken to a hospital for ankle treatment and assured it was a minor injury to recover from. As for the damaged structure, it was said to be an outbuilding which held little significance as opposed to homes or any other major structures.
These kinds of breaking news are important to hear about because they present us an idea of how quick it is to bring down something to flames and destroy. The real difficulty and hard work is found in the ones who try to fix the problem and are highly respected for it. These stories show us how far brave and courageous people such as firefighters will go to keep a safe and nonhazardous area for the public. These kinds of people inspire us to be just as heroic and passionate in what we do in life.
